Customer ARWE Holding GmbH, headquartered in Munich, provides staff-intensive, technical mobility services for car manufacturers and dealers, carsharing providers, car rental companies and leasing companies. With their services ARWE is represented at over 450 locations all over Europe.

The Project

Within their business division CarRental services, ARWE is responsible for the turnaround process of rental cars in specially intended rental car centers and service centers. With CARWE, we developed a solution which allows to control and document the vehicles in one single central system. The primary goal of our software was to entirely replace the previously used system. Thanks to the new software, the whole turnaround process (namely the reception of vehicles, check-in, checking for damage, cleaning, refueling, parking lot management, delivery notes, invoices and much more) can be displayed and handled within one single solution now.

The Challenge

Since ARWE processes a large amount of rental cars at the CarRental airport locations in Europe daily, they demand a high-performing software which also needs to take into account the car rental companies’ differing damage matrices. As seamless Wi-Fi cannot be provided at every airport location, the system has to be reliable and fast for one thing, but first and foremost it has to be available offline as well. Additionally, a very tight time schedule of 6 months was strictly predetermined for the implementation of a new system.

The Approach

Since the entire project period was limited to six months, we made sure to keep the software lean from the very beginning. While developing, our focus was to create an executable product as quickly as possible, while implementing the most crucial features. Simultaneously, we kept the software easily expandable in order to add potentially missing features without circumstances later after the first Go Live.

Utilized Core Competencies

We answered ARWE’s complex task with an individual software solution for which we made use of several of our core competencies. Beginning with process consultancy and optimization, we developed scalable systems and later an app as well as web application. Throughout the whole project, a special focus was put on user experience (UX/UI).

The Solution

For the implementation of our approaches, we relied on the Spring Framework, Angular 6, Android 6+ and PostgreSQL. Spring Framework and Angular are often used in our company and belong to the most widely spread technologies of their respective sectors. PostgreSQL as free, relational database suited the project’s requirements well. Android 6+ provided all necessary features with simultaneously high availability of economical, industrial devices.

CARWE software was the result of the six-month project duration. It meets the goal of having a high performance and our customer’s employees gladly and quickly accepted it for its ease of operation and user friendliness. Processing time of vehicles was significantly reduced, and we are already planning to implement many more features into the CARWE software together with our client in the near future.
